CTOnews.com, January 5 (Xinhua)-- French regulators fined Apple as much as 8 million euros (about 58.32 million yuan) after believing that Apple's targeted advertising on App Store violated French data protection regulations.

The French National Council for Informatics and Freedom (CNIL) said Apple did not obtain the consent of French iPhone users before using identifiers to present targeted ads in the iOS 14.6 update.

Apple collects information by default and uses the data for advertising, and CNIL believes that users must take "a lot of action" to turn off advertising in the "privacy" section of the "Settings" app. As a result, CNIL ruled that Apple violated Section 82 of the data Protection Act and was fined 8 million euros.

"the CNIL service found that under the old version 14.6 of the iPhone operating system, when a user accesses App Store, by default it automatically reads identifiers for a variety of purposes, including the purpose of customizing advertisements displayed on App Store without the consent of the end user," the report said.

CTOnews.com learned that in a statement sent to Fortune magazine Patrick McGee, Apple said it was "disappointed" with the decision and planned to appeal, noting that it only used its own data for personalized advertising.

"We are disappointed with this decision because CNIL has previously recognized that the way we provide search advertising in App Store will give priority to user privacy and we will appeal," Apple said.
