CTOnews.com, January 4 (Xinhua)-- South Korea's first lunar orbiter, Danuri, sent back its first black-and-white picture of the lunar surface and the earth. "Danuri", the Korean homonym for "moon" and "enjoy", was launched from the United States on a SpaceX rocket in August 2022 and entered lunar orbit last month.

The picture was taken between December 24 and January 1, the South Korean Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (KARI) said in a statement. The photos show the surface of the moon and the earth, and were taken from less than 120 kilometers (75 miles) above the moon.

Danuri orbits the moon every two hours, the center said. The orbiter will begin its scientific mission next month, including mapping and analyzing lunar topography and measuring magnetic and gamma rays.

CTOnews.com learned that the "Danuri" is about to begin testing all kinds of systems and equipment on board to carry out lunar exploration missions. It is equipped with a high-resolution camera developed by the Research Institute, which will photograph the lunar surface at a resolution of up to 2.5 meters. It is also equipped with a wide-angle polarization camera and a gamma-ray spectrometer, which will be used to explore underground resources on the moon. It will also use a polarizer to photograph the far side of the moon.
