The move comes at a time when Google and the technology industry as a whole face ethical challenges because of increasingly complex artificial intelligence models.

Rehn previously led an integrated disciplinary team at Microsoft on issues related to ethical data collection, generative artificial intelligence data, face recognition and responsible product design. After joining Google, she will report to James James Manyika, who joined Google a year ago as senior vice president of technology and society. The fledgling team also attracted Srinivasan Venkatachary, the former head of Apple's search business.

Ryan himself has confirmed this. But a Google spokesman has yet to comment on Mr. Rehn's arrival.

In addition, there are reports that Microsoft and OpenAI are developing a version of AI chat robot ChatGPT for search engine Bing to challenge Google's search position.
