Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, January 3, the Times of India reported that after successfully attracting the landing of Apple's iPhone contract factory, the government is prepared to increase the investment agreement to attract MacBook and iPad to assemble / manufacture in the country, hoping to expand the IT hardware production related incentive (PLI) program of nearly 200 billion rupees.

India's Ministry of Information Technology has proposed a revised IT hardware production-related incentive (PLI) scheme to encourage investment in the manufacture of laptops, tablets, AIO PC and servers, a government official said.

According to sources, India has successfully tested the production of iPhone, and the next step will be to start producing other products such as MacBook and iPad. In addition, the media previously reported that the Indian Ministry of Information Technology plans to increase incentives under the PLI program, which may be announced in April 2023.

"We have tasted the success of iPhone production because all of Apple's top manufacturers-Foxconn, Witronix and Pegatron-are now making billions of dollars worth of smartphones here. Our next step is to produce other products such as the MacBook and iPad in India," the source told the Times of India.

As a node department to promote the development of the country's electronics manufacturing industry, the Ministry of Information Technology has submitted a proposal to strengthen the plan, which has been referred to the Ministry of Finance and other relevant departments.

The Times of India reported that the government planned to raise the budget to 200 billion rupees and increase incentive support from 1.4 per cent to an average of 5 per cent. CTOnews.com has learned that India's budget for 2021 is 73.5 billion Indian rupees ($890 million), but has yet to attract global PC manufacturers.

It is worth mentioning that India's policy on laptops is completely different from smartphones because they impose a 20 per cent tariff on imported smartphones, while laptops do not have such restrictions because the category belongs to ITA-1 and allows zero tariff imports. As a result, more mobile phone brands have no choice than computers, and they have to move their production base to India to avoid high tariffs to affect competitiveness.

Meanwhile, the Economic Times reported that Apple's suppliers in India, such as Foxconn, Witronix and Pegatron, have created 50, 000 direct jobs and nearly 100000 indirect jobs since the PLI was planned for mass production.
