LockBit, one of the world's most notorious blackmail software gangs, issued a rare apology after claiming that one of its partners was responsible for a cyber attack at Canada's largest pediatric hospital.

On December 18, 2022, the Toronto Children's Hospital (SickKids) was attacked by ransomware, depriving the agency of access to many critical systems. The incident led to an increase in patient waiting time. As of December 29, SickKids said it had regained access to nearly 50% of priority systems, including those that caused delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Over the weekend, security researcher Dominic Alvieri found that the LockBit gang apologized for its involvement in the incident. The group said it would provide SickKids with free decryption tools and blocked "partners" who carried out the attack on the grounds that it violated the gang's rules. The group says it forbids affiliates from targeting "medical institutions" that could lead to someone's death.

CTOnews.com found that an official at Toronto Children's Hospital (SickKids) acknowledged LockBit's statement and said it was working with external security experts to "verify and evaluate the use of decryption tools."

The hospital also stated that it had recently resumed about 60 per cent of access to its priority systems, and that the recovery work was in progress. So far, there is no evidence that personal information or personal health information has been affected, nor has the hospital paid any ransom.
