CTOnews.com, January 2 (Xinhua)-- many flagship phones already support reverse wireless charging to charge accessories such as wireless headphones, and now Apple seems to be considering providing a similar feature for the iPhone.

Apple has obtained a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a new wireless charging system that uses dual-mode magnetic alignment elements to align devices, Patently Apple reported. In the future, the back of the future iPhone may use this new wireless charging system, and AirPods, Apple Watch and other accessories can be recharged wirelessly. Apple's current wireless charging system on the back of the iPhone is limited to a large coil and cannot charge small devices such as the Apple Watch.

Apple points out in the patent that, among other things, the efficiency of wireless power transmission depends on the alignment between the transmitter and receiver coils. For example, transmitter coils and receiver coils may perform best when arranged coaxially. If the surface of a portable electronic device is flat and has no guiding function, it may be difficult to find the appropriate alignment position.

As far as CTOnews.com knows, the patent is complex and highly technical, and Apple details how accessories placed on the back of the iPhone can be charged wirelessly without always having to consider its correct location. The patent explains that "devices containing dual-mode alignment components can be interchangeably connected with other devices through the primary or secondary ring alignment assembly", but the overall goal is to be able to simply place the AirPods Pro wireless charging box, or even the Apple Watch, horizontally on the back of the iPhone and charge it during the journey without overthinking about the alignment or paying attention to whether its position changes at all times.

In any case, the patent seems to bring us one step closer to Apple's reverse wireless charging system, which may even be supported by the iPhone 15 series.
