CTOnews.com, January 2, according to The Elec, Samsung shows that (Samsung Display) has changed its priorities in developing eighth-generation IT OLED panels.

Samsung is planning to postpone investment in its full-cutting, vertical deposition method, which it has developed with Ulvac of Japan for more than a year. Samsung has shown that it will turn to invest in the Canon Tokki half-shear horizontal deposition method, which has been under development, the source said. This approach has been commercialized with the aim of providing Apple with OLED panels for iPad tablets. Apple is planning to launch an iPad with OLED panels.

Samsung display has been working with Ulvac to develop full-cutting vertical deposition devices to make single-layer OLED panels or only a single RGB emitter layer to supply panels to Asustek and other PC manufacturers.

On the other hand, a project with Canon Tokki is developing a half-cut horizontal deposition device to make double stack series OLED panels with double RGB emitting layers.

Apple has asked its display makers to develop OLED panels with two stacks in series.

Another reason for the delay in Samsung's project with Ulvac may be that the technology is not mature enough.

CTOnews.com has learned that Samsung shows that it is planning to use 8.7G substrates, but the deposition devices developed are more for 8.5G substrates. Although their size 2290x2620 millimeters may look small compared to 2200x2500 millimeters, significant redesign is required in the actual manufacture of equipment.

The economic downturn also means that Samsung is in no hurry to invest billions of dollars in eighth-generation OLED panels when demand for consumer electronics is sluggish.
