CTOnews.com, January 2 (Xinhua)-- Apple announced the acquisition of classical music service Primephonic in August 2021. At the time, Apple said it planned to release a special classical music app in 2022, but now that year is over and the app has not yet been launched.

"Apple Music plans to launch a dedicated classical music app next year, combined with Primephonic's classical user interface, to make fans like more additional features," Apple said in a 2021 press release. Since then, Apple has not publicly responded to the plan, and it is unclear whether the app will be released in 2023.

The Primephonic classical music service was shut down in September 2021, and users at that time were given free access to Apple Music for six months. If the new app is eventually launched, the Apple Classical Music app will serve as an alternative to Primephonic, providing users with classical music experiences such as Beethoven and Mozart.

Last year, hidden references to Apple's classical music app were found in Android's Apple Music app beta and iOS 15.5 beta. Even more references to the classical music app were found in the XML file on Apple's server last year.

Apple said it would incorporate the best features of Primephonic, including "better browsing and searching by composer and repertoire" and "detailed display of classical music metadata", which Apple may need more time to do. Primephonic also compensates artists and other rights holders with its unique pay-per-second-listened model, rather than the pay-per-play model like Apple Music, so maybe Apple is still trying to find a suitable payment model for Apple's classical music apps.

It is unclear whether Apple's classical music app will be released sometime in 2023, or whether the plan has been abandoned. Apple did not respond.
