According to the official website of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Wang Fosong, famous chemist, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences and former director of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences, died in Beijing at 14:59 on December 31, 2022 at the age of 89.

CTOnews.com learned that Mr. Wang Fosong was born in Xingning County, Guangdong Province on May 23, 1933, according to the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Wuhan University in 1955. He was assigned to the Leningrad Institute of Polymer compounds of the former Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1956, received an associate doctorate in chemical science in the former Soviet Union in 1960, and was assigned to work in Changchun Institute of Chemical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the same year. He served as director of Changchun Institute of Chemical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1985 to 1988, and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1988 to 1994. He was elected as a member of the Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) in 1991. He was elected as an academician of the third World Academy of Sciences in 2002.

According to reports, Mr. Wang Fosong is a famous polymer chemist in China, who has been engaged in directional polymerization, rare earth catalysis and conductive polymer research for a long time and achieved fruitful results. As a major member, he tackled the industrial production technology of cis-polybutadiene rubber and successfully developed two catalytic systems of cobalt and nickel. He led the research and development of rare earth isoprene rubber, invented the rare earth catalyst for directional polymerization of isoprene, and clarified the formation and catalytic mechanism of active centers. He took the lead in carrying out the research and development of conductive polymers in China, broke through a series of technical problems in the batch production of Polyaniline, and pushed Polyaniline and its anticorrosive coatings to industrialization. He carried out the research on polymer-inorganic nanocomposites, established the brittle-ductile transition theory of polymers, and successfully prepared super-tough reinforced polymer alloys for the first time.

Mr. Wang Fosong is an outstanding leader in China's scientific and technological circles. During his tenure as director of Changchun Institute of Chemical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he actively promoted a number of reform and innovation measures for scientific and technological undertakings, especially in the transformation of achievements and the introduction and training of talents. He advocated and organized the transformation of scientific research achievements and stressed the need to vigorously develop the science and technology industry. He was elected as a member of the standing Committee of the eighth and Ninth National people's Congress and a member of the Seventh CPPCC National Committee.
