Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com December 31, TSMC held a mass production and expansion ceremony of 3nm in Tainan Science Park on December 29, officially announcing the launch of large-scale production of 3nm. Samsung started N3 (3nm) process chip manufacturing a few months ago, but TSMC's good rate is significantly better.

According to Business Next, analysts and experts specializing in semiconductors estimate that TSMC's N3 yield may be as low as 60% to 70%, or as high as 75% to 80%, which is pretty good for the first batch of products. At the same time, financial analyst Dan Nystedt said on Twitter that TSMC's current N3 yield is similar to that of N5 at the initial stage of the rise, which could be as high as 80 per cent.

By contrast, Samsung's 3GAE process yield in the early stages ranges from 10% to 20%, and there is no improvement.

Since TSMC currently has a limited number of commercial N3 designs (presumably no more than three IC), and the yield-related data are trade secrets of the contract factory and its customers, it is not possible to make a specific judgment on how high or low TSMC's N3 yield is.

In addition, given the rumors surrounding the initial N3 node, also known as N3B, Apple may be the only company to adopt the technology, and other developers are expected to use the more stable N3E improved process.

CTOnews.com has been informed that TSMC will adopt the N3-node process with limited capacity, then switch to a more stable and efficient full-production N3E in late 2023, and then to N3P in 2024, when TSMC will put its 2nm GAA process into trial production at the Hsinchu plant and mass production in 2025.

TSMC's website shows that its 3nm process is another all-generation process after 5nm, with the best PPA and transistor technology. Compared with the 5nm process, the logic density of the 3nm process will increase by about 70%, the speed will be increased by 10-15% at the same power consumption, or the power consumption will be reduced by 25-30% at the same speed.
