"We are pleased that the Luxexcel team has joined Meta, deepening the existing partnership between the two companies," said Ryan Moore, Meta's director of financial communications at the company.

Although the terms of the deal are unknown, Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer and head of Reality Labs, revealed in a blog post earlier this month that the company would focus on augmented reality (AR) for "about half" of metaverse's operating expenses, while the other half would continue to develop multibillion-dollar virtual reality products.

Luxexcel, founded in 2009, says it can add AR elements to its lenses, such as holographic films and projectors. According to reports, it has previously cooperated with WaveOptics to develop a lens with waveguide structure, which is a transparent display technology needed for AR.

CTOnews.com warns that while Meta is working on its first AR glasses, it may be a long time before we can see the finished product. Bosworth said Meta's AR glasses would "take years to develop" as it tries to make the device "thinner, lighter, faster and more powerful".

In June this year, foreign media reported that Meta AR glasses will initially be available only to developers, just like Snap glasses, and later products may be available to consumers within a few years.
