CTOnews.com new Counterpoint Research report says Apple continues to lead other companies in reducing their carbon footprint. According to the report, 80% of the carbon footprint of smartphones comes from their production process, and Apple has taken many effective measures to help reduce the pressure on the environment caused by manufacturing.

Counterpoint Research writes: "Each [smartphone manufacturer] has its own sustainability vision and overall approach. Apple seems to have a clearer vision than its competitors and has more proven measures in place to advance it." The report highlights Apple's efforts to make its manufacturing process greener while keeping older phones functional longer.

CTOnews.com learned that Samsung came in second, scoring high in serviceability, energy efficiency and aftermarket networking. The report also suggests smartphone manufacturers can improve their sustainability scores by partnering with reputable dealers and third-party repair companies.

Apple will become a carbon-neutral company by 2020. Lisa Jackson, Apple's senior vice president, noted that the company does this not only by purchasing carbon credits, but also by prioritizing clean energy. The Cupertino-based tech giant has also made strides in recycling components for reuse. Apple uses the recycling robot Daisy to disassemble 1.2 million iPhones a year.
