Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, December 29 (Xinhua)-- the Apple A17 chip expected to be used in the iPhone 15 may focus more on improved battery life than on processing performance, according to 9to5 Mac. Apple chipmaker TSMC put more emphasis on energy efficiency than performance when discussing the 3nm process destined for the iPhone 15 series.
Background
TSMC has been leading the chip manufacturing industry to use more and more advanced technology. Next year's Apple iPhone 15 series, as well as Mac products powered by the new M2 Pro chip, are expected to use TSMC's new 3nm process, which has already started mass production.
Moving forward to the 3nm process will be an important step. The A16 chip in Apple's iPhone 14 Pro uses the "4nm process", but TSMC describes the N4 process for the processor as an enhanced version of the 5nm-so it will actually jump directly from the 5nm to the 3nm process.
Each generation of new processes allows for more performance in chips of the same size. In general, there is a balance between performance and power consumption, and Apple's chip design is designed to provide good comprehensive results through a mix of performance and efficiency cores.
TSMC is preparing for 3nm production of A17 chip
With nine months to go before the launch of Apple's iPhone 15, TSMC's factories will have plenty of time to get ready. TSMC has celebrated the start of mass production of 3nm chips. CTOnews.com learned that the new process is expected to be the first to have the new M2 Pro chip in Apple's Mac, which will be ahead of the A17 processor in iPhone 15. Future Apple M3 chips are also expected to use 3nm technology.
Mark Liu, chairman of TSMC, said its 3nm process had better performance than 5nm chips and reduced power consumption by about 35 per cent.
Apple will of course participate in the chip design produced by TSMC and is free to use higher transistor density to meet its goals. While the chipmaker seems to prefer to emphasize energy efficiency rather than performance, it is not clear that this will also be a priority for Apple's A17 chip.
Similarly, since iPhone chips are rarely limited in terms of performance, many users welcome greater improvements in battery life.
In the case of the M2 Pro chip for Mac devices in 2023, Apple will squeeze as much performance from the chip as possible, although the Apple Silicon chip will also achieve incredible energy efficiency.
