CTOnews.com, December 29, how should astronauts navigate after landing on the moon? On Earth, humans can also locate by observing things around them and through satellites such as Beidou and GPS, but there will be great challenges on the moon. Scientists are now creating an artificial intelligence system that can guide future astronauts to the moon for positioning and navigation.

Alvin Yew, a research engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbert, Maryland, is creating an artificial intelligence system that can guide explorers to fly around the lunar surface.

The AI system mainly uses data collected by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. CTOnews.com learned that the vehicle is equipped with the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA), which can measure slope and lunar surface roughness to produce a high-resolution lunar topographic map.

Scientists use these digital panoramas to match images taken by rovers or astronauts with known boulders, ridges and even craters to pinpoint the location of any given area.

"for the sake of safety and scientific geography, it is important for explorers to know exactly where they are when exploring the moon," Alvin Yew said in a NASA press release. Conceptually, the AI system is to figure out where you are by measuring the horizon and surrounding landmarks. Current results show that we can already know the approximate location, but we will improve it later to make the progress less than 30 feet (9 meters).
