CTOnews.com, December 29, the biggest highlight of the iPhone 14 Pro model is the Smart Island solution, whose hardware is provided by Samsung in addition to software interaction design. At the behest of Apple, Samsung was forced to seal the holes in the OLED screen around the smart island by Ink Jet Printing (IJP) to prevent oxygen or water from entering and extend the life of the panel, according to South Korean media The Elec.

On iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models, Samsung only uses OLED inkjet printing during plane fit (lamination), while on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, Apple requires Samsung to also use OLED inkjet printing in the touch layer (touch layer) to increase screen durability.

Samsung said it had planned to use only laser cutting and sealing, but Apple insisted on using inkjet printing to seal the edges of the island and create an "isolation area" that separates the island from the rest of the OLED screen, while eliminating the inevitable height drop caused by the edge piercing a cut in the uninterrupted panel.

In other words, at Apple's repeated requests, Samsung was forced to use inkjet printing on holes such as Smart Island to complete edge sealing, which Samsung had never done before.

Apple has also asked LG Display to make such a screen, but its craftsmanship is not up to Apple's requirements, so the iPhone 14 Pro screen is provided entirely by Samsung. However, sources say that the current craftsmanship of the LG display has met Apple's requirements, which means that Apple's iPhone 15 Pro model may use the LG screen.

CTOnews.com learned that ink-jet printing (Ink-jet printing, IJP) involves dissolving the OLED material in a solvent to form a solution, then ejecting it with a sprinkler and a very small volume (1 × 10-12 L), a small drop of ink is accurately printed on the pixel electrode and dried to form a film on the device. This process theoretically achieves a material utilization rate of 100%, and is not limited by size, and there is no pressure corresponding to various sizes.
