CTOnews.com, December 28 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- during the Linux 6.2 merger window, the linear address mask (LAM) proposal submitted by Intel engineers was rejected by Linus Torvalds. Intel engineers submitted the 13th version again today, hoping to incorporate the feature in Linux 6.3 or later.

CTOnews.com learned that the Intel Linear address Mask (LAM) allows software to use all untranslated addresses in metadata 64-bit linear addresses. Currently linear addresses use either 48 bits (level 4 pages) or 57 bits (level 5 pages), while Intel's LAM proposal wants to use all 64 bits of data.

However, the proposal was rejected by Linus Torvalds on the grounds that changing the untagged_addr () function could have a "destructive" effect, and he personally made it clear that he did not like the name LAM, because Arm already provided this feature through TBI.

The v13 patch marked with a linear address mask this morning has been sent for review. This v13 series fixes the competition between untagged_addr () and LAM. For the change to v13, it does not allow LAM and other changes to the untagged address feature after the process generates a second thread. For more details on the changes, see the v13 series.
