CTOnews.com, December 28, the palera1n team launched a jailbreak tool for iOS 16 in the middle of this month, which removes software restrictions on iOS devices so that users can access and modify system files to achieve a variety of custom modifications and application side loading. Now a developer is trying to take advantage of a vulnerability found in iOS 16 to change the default font on iOS without jailbreaking.

Developer Zhuowei Zhang shared the GitHub project on personal Twitter, which he called a "proof-of-concept application." Zhang says the app uses the CVE-2022-46689 vulnerability to override the default iOS font so that users can use fonts other than the default font (San Francisco) to customize the appearance of the system.

CTOnews.com learned that iOS 16.1.2 and earlier were affected by the CVE-2022-46689 vulnerability, which basically allowed applications to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. This vulnerability has been fixed in iOS 16.2, and the new version also fixes a series of other security vulnerabilities found in previous versions of iOS.

Because iOS has its own font format, developers have experimented with only a few fonts, including DejaVu Sans Condensed, Serif, Mono, and Choco Cooky.

Zhang says the changes are theoretically safe for everyone, so these font changes will be undone after the device is rebooted. However, developers recommend that users back up before changing the default system font.

Although the application created by Zhang does not require jailbreak, it may not be easy to install it on iPhone or iPad. This is because you need to compile the Xcode project yourself or manually sign the IPA file with a developer certificate to install it on your device.
