CTOnews.com, December 27, ROHM Co., Ltd. is one of the world's well-known semiconductor manufacturers and the first Japanese company to enter Silicon Valley in the United States. According to Nippon Keizai Shimbun, Roma has now developed a small transistor that consumes 20% less power than before.

Compared with traditional transistors, this small transistor uses original TDACC circuit design technology, reducing power loss by 20%. CTOnews.com learned that the semiconductor, which is expected to be used in wearable devices such as wireless headphones and watch terminals, can efficiently switch current on and off even if the total length is only 1mm. The company will initially produce 10 million units a month.

It is said that the transistor is close to the minimum size, 1 mm long and 0.6 mm wide, and is mainly used to switch the power needed by electronic components and sensors inside wearable devices and so on.

Compared with ordinary products of the same size, the power loss of the new small transistor is reduced by 20%. It is difficult for transistors to reduce both "on resistance" and "switching loss" at the same time, but Rom successfully takes into account both by using large-scale integrated circuit (LSI) technology. The silicon substrate is not covered with resin, but coated with independent insulating film, which realizes miniaturization.

Officials point out that if the transistors are used in headphones, they can use 2 to 4 transistors in each product, which can also greatly reduce the space occupied by electronic circuits.
