Johnny Srouji, senior vice president of hardware technology at Apple, is worried about it.

While Apple's A-Series SoC continues to lead the smartphone market in terms of performance, performance improvements between generations are getting smaller and smaller. On the one hand, this is due to technical limitations, but another important reason is the departure of many executives and engineers in Apple's chip division.

CTOnews.com previously reported that the A16 Bionic chip had ray tracing in the early stages of its design, but it was too power-consuming to be used in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This may be why there is evidence that Apple's latest top-level iPhone SoC uses an GPU architecture similar to A15 Bionic.

Besides technology, brain drain has become a big problem, and more and more chip engineers, such as designer Gerard Williams III, are job-hopping. He left to start Nuvia in 2019 and was acquired by Qualcomm, which subsequently launched Oryon.

To prevent more engineers from leaving the company, Apple has made some internal speeches to convince its employees that their careers at Apple are more rewarding and stable, and that moving to other startups is a huge risk. Given that many industry experts and economic observers predict a severe recession, many of these engineers may prefer to work at Apple.

The performance gap between Apple's A-Series chips and Qualcomm Snapdragon chips is getting smaller and smaller. The Information said Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has narrowed the gap, and if the A17 Bionic, launched next year, continues to disappoint in performance, Qualcomm and MediaTek could overtake Apple in their successor models at the end of 2023.
