Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Harry12345 for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 25 (Xinhua)-- Rolls-Royce (Rolls-Royce) is preparing to test a prototype of its UltraFan engine, the world's largest turbofan engine, aimed at reducing carbon emissions while the aviation industry promotes sustainability in the coming years.

Rolls-Royce said it had completed the construction of its UltraFan demonstration turbine and shipped it to Derby's dedicated Testbed 80, where it was installed in preparation for testing early next year.

Chris Cholerton, president of the civil aerospace division of ▲ UltraFan engine prototype Rolls-Royce, said: "seeing the UltraFan demo product portfolio and preparing for testing in Testbed 80 is a good way to end the year. The next phase will see UltraFan using 100% sustainable aviation fuel for the first time in 2023, proving that the technology is ready to support more sustainable flights in the future."

CTOnews.com learned that Rolls-Royce's UltraFan turbofan engine has a fan diameter of 140inch, which is 25 per cent more fuel efficient than the first-generation Trent engine. The UltraFan program aims to provide sustainable development options to support the aviation industry's transition to net zero emissions by 2050.

In the long run, UltraFan's scalable technology has the potential to increase the fuel efficiency of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft by a further 10 per cent, according to Rolls-Royce.

The first trial run of a prototype UltraFan engine will use 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuel, an alternative to jet fuel that is expected to play a key role in reducing net emissions in the coming years, but is currently expensive and in short supply.
