Samsung received 51 reports of "washing machines smoking, melting, overheating or catching fire," the report said. Of these, 10 reported property damage and 3 clients reported injuries caused by smoke inhalation.

Several of Samsung's ultra-high-speed drum washing machines have been affected, including WA49B, WA50B, WA51A, WA52A, WA54A and WA55A, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has released a range of serial numbers for the 14 recalled models.

From June 2021 to December 2022, the 663500 washing machines were sold at big retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot and Lloyd's for between $9 billion and $1500.

CTOnews.com learned that the CPSC website shows that software updates can solve the fire hazard. "consumers should immediately check whether the software of the washing machine has been updated to prevent harm; if not, consumers should immediately stop using the washing machine until the software update is pushed."

Samsung said all washing machines equipped with Wi-Fi are expected to automatically download free software fixes when connected to the Internet. Users without the Internet can get a free adapter from Samsung to plug into the washing machine and download free software fixes.
