CTOnews.com, Dec. 25 (Xinhua)-- Porsche has upgraded the on-board charger of its electric car Taycan and halved its charging time.

Porsche Taycan has lagged behind competitors such as Tesla Model S and Lucid Air in terms of battery life and charging time. Now, Porsche is trying to change that and upgrade its on-board charger.

It is understood that Porsche's new charger uses a new charging interface, which will provide a maximum charging power of 19.2 kilowatts and can increase the charging speed to level 2, while the existing charging interface can only support 11 kilowatts of charging power. For Porsche Taycan, the slow charging time of models with 79.2kwh battery packs will be reduced from 9.5hrs to 4.8hrs with new charging ports, while those with 93.4kwh battery packs can also be reduced from 10.5hrs to 5.3hrs.

CTOnews.com learned that in overseas markets, the new charger costs $1850 (12930 yuan) and must be paired with Porsche's proprietary wall charger, which costs $1500. In addition, it is not easy to replace the new charger because the charger is located at the back of the front trunk and requires a new harness. Porsche estimates that all the modifications will take 12 hours, and the total cost of doubling the charging speed could be about $4500 (31455 yuan) based on dealers' charges of $200 an hour or more.

According to previous reports, a higher-level performance version of the Taycan is under development, and Porsche plans to launch six pure electric vehicles in the next eight years, including the Panamera pure electric version, the Macan pure electric version, the Cayenne pure electric version and the 718 pure electric version.
