Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, December 23, according to the Electronic Times, TSMC's new American plant in Arizona has won Tesla's order for 4nm chips and is expected to start mass production in 2024. In addition, TSMC recently won orders from Volkswagen, General Motors and Toyota.

CTOnews.com has reported that last month, it was reported that Tesla placed a huge order for 4nm chips with TSMC, which is planned to be used in Tesla's auto autopilot system in the future.

Lin Zhenming, director of TSMC Automotive and Microcontroller Business Development Division, previously said that the automotive semiconductor market is expected to grow at an annual compound growth rate of 16% in 2021-2026, reaching US $8.5 billion in 2026.

In addition, Huang Chongren, chairman of LJC, also pointed out that in the past, the chip cost of a car in a traditional car factory was about US $500,600, with major changes in the role of semiconductors in automotive electronics. the chips used in each car are expected to increase from $500 now to $2000 to $5000.

According to semiconductor industry insiders, the automotive semiconductor market has always been dominated by Infineon, NXP, Renesas, TI and STM. Considering cost and capacity deployment, more than 20% of the semiconductor market has been outsourced to fabs.

With the chip shortage changing the ecological model of car chain, wafer foundry comes from customers in the field of automotive electronics, not only IDM factories, but also IC design customers and increase automotive chip research and development, design strength, at the same time, international car factories have announced that they will invest in chip design and find wafer factories to cooperate.

Among them, it is roughly estimated that about 8% of the automotive chips in Chengdu adopt a mature process on 28nm, and 20% (mostly related to ADAS) use less than 14nm, while this part is only received by Samsung and TSMC, and take the lead with TSMC technology and yield. Therefore, it is constantly reported that TSMC has won a number of orders for automotive chips below 7nm.

The semiconductor industry further pointed out that at present, the electric vehicle battlefield is led by Tesla, and its technology is about three to five years ahead of its competitors. It previously cooperated with TSMC for a long time, but handed over the self-driving chip Hardware 3.0 to Samsung 14nm and 7nm OEM production in 2019.

However, with the great increase in the demand for AI computing power and security, coupled with the poor yield and efficiency of Samsung, no matter how cheap the OEM quotation is, Tesla has to go back to cooperate with TSMC, so he will hand over Hardware 4.0 to TSMC OEM, and will project in the new factory in the United States, using the 4nm process.

In addition, TSMC also cooperated with Volkswagen, Italy and France, and also won a contract for General Motors wafer foundry.

"it is reported that TSMC replaced Samsung to win the big order of Tesla's assistant driving FSD chip, which is produced based on 4/5nm process."
