CTOnews.com December 23, citing foreign technology media Patently Apple reported that LG Innotek, an important contract manufacturer of camera modules for Apple, plans to officially launch the ultra-compact optical zoom camera module at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

CTOnews.com learned that the camera module is an ultra-compact module that enables telephoto cameras in smartphones. The zoom lens mechanism of a mirrorless camera can be implemented on a smartphone to achieve a clearer image in the focal length range of 85-125mm, and the image quality will not be degraded during video recording.

To ensure a clear image in the 85-125mm focal length range, LG Innotek has developed a zoom actuator (zoom actuator) that provides clear image quality in all ranges of 4 to 9 magnification. In addition, its actuators are excellent in accuracy, speed and durability, and consume less battery.

Jeong Cheol-dong, CEO of LG Innotek, said that with the increasing demand for optical zoom from customers around the world, LG Innotek plans to accelerate market penetration with its differentiated technology and business capabilities.

Although LG Innotek has partnered with Qualcomm to develop Android phones, LG Innotek is still likely to become a supplier of optical zoom modules to Apple's iPhone 15, a feature that the iPhone 14 Pro lacks.

LG Innotek is Apple's largest partner in optics. South Korean media ETNews reported in October that the company had begun to develop a folding camera. The folding camera is the first technology used in Galaxy S20 Ultra, which went on sale in January last year.

Samsung Electronics acquired Israel's Corephotonics, acquired core technology, and Samsung Electric developed a folding camera and commercialized it. The possibility of a partnership between Apple and Samsung has been mentioned after Samsung has the core technology of folding cameras. As it happens, Samsung Electric has also begun to supply lenses to Apple, and whether the two sides have successfully supplied folding cameras has attracted the attention of the industry.
