CTOnews.com, December 23 (Xinhua)-- Australian vehicle safety regulator ANCAP (New car Safety Program) revealed the best performing model this year, Tesla Model Y, according to its 2022 rating criteria. ANCAP rated Tesla Model Y as the overall best car according to the 2020-2022 rating standard.

In addition, ANCAP also announced that stricter safety test rating standards for new cars will come into effect in January 2023.

CTOnews.com learned that the electric SUV just went on sale in Australia in August, two years after its debut in the US home market.

Pent-up demand made the Model Y one of Australia's best-selling models in September, although sales fell in October and November, but the small SUV is still the most popular electric car in Australia.

The overall weighted score of Model Y is 92.6%, and the scores of each security test are as follows:

Adult occupant protection score 97%

Child occupant protection score 89%

The score of pedestrian protection is 82%.

The security assistance system scored 98%.

Tesla Model Y was followed by Lexus NX (medium-sized SUV) with a score of 89.2%, while the new SAIC Chase MAXUS MIFA 9 and LDV MIFA scored 87.4%.

Other models that performed well included Ford Ranger, Ford roadshaker, Nissan Walkman and Nissan Pathfinder, which scored the highest for child protection (93%), while Toyota Corolla Ruifang scored the highest score for pedestrian protection (87%).

According to the ANCAP statement, Model Y scored the highest scores in the areas of adult occupant protection (97%) and safety assistance (98%). However, they also stressed that the best performers must not have deficiencies in all key areas of safety assessment.

Of the 69 models rated by ANCAP in the past three years, 61 received ANCAP's highest five-star safety rating, while 31 (45 per cent) were new energy models during that period.
