CTOnews.com, December 22, AppleInsider, a foreign technology media, recently pointed out two major problems on Apple's CarPlay: late follow-up by automakers and poor application quality. Apple launched the CarPlay in 2014, and automakers began to support the system one after another.

As the main purpose of CarPlay is to project iPhone to the central console of the car, so the technical requirements are not high, and mainly rely on iPhone to achieve. Apple has two major problems in updating its CarPlay, which have not yet been solved.

Car companies are not interested in following up on the new features of CarPlay

At present, there are many vehicles that support CarPlay, but automakers only support this feature of Apple, but do not follow up on the new feature.

The most typical example is the wireless CarPlay. Although Apple launched the wireless feature as early as 2016, most car companies have not followed suit and still need a wired connection. It wasn't until last year (that is, five years after its launch) that new models began to support.

Apple also allows the CarPlay to display information and navigation information on the vehicle's dashboard, but the car companies have largely failed to follow suit. One reason is that carmakers prefer their own infotainment operating systems to those controlled by Apple or Google. In this way, they can have a firm grasp of the user experience and upsell additional services such as navigation.

CTOnews.com has learned that Apple has no plans to push this, and Apple has promised to make comprehensive improvements to the CarPlay experience by the end of 2023, nine years after its release. But the specific improvement measures are not clear at present.

Poor quality of application

The second pain point for CarPlay is the quality of its applications. Apple's official CarPlay app experience is not good, let alone third-party apps. Many applications oversimplify and simplify the experience to provide the compelling design of their iOS companion applications.

Of course, to be used in vehicles, the user interface needs to be concise and easy to use on the road. These applications do not distract drivers and need to take safety into account. Take the Sirius XM application as an example. It has a poor CarPlay experience and presents nothing new in a boring list view.
