Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, December 22 (Xinhua)-- Netflix, a popular streaming service, is planning to crack down on password sharing from early 2023, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.
Tuyuan PexelsNetflix has long known that password sharing is an issue affecting its profits, but the rise in subscriptions in 2020 prevented the company from solving the problem for the time being. With revenues falling this year and Netflix losing users for the first time in a decade, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings decided it was time to take action on a problem that had been on hold for too long.
Starting in 2023, the Netflix plan requires payments to people who share accounts with other people outside the family. Netflix has tested additional payment policies for password sharing in some Latin American countries, charging about $3 extra. In these countries, the main account owner must provide a CAPTCHA to people outside the home who want to access the account, and Netflix will repeatedly ask for CAPTCHA until a monthly fee is paid to increase the number of non-home users.
A similar strategy may be adopted in the United States, where Netflix may charge non-home users who share someone's subscription a little less than $6.99 for an advertising support program. Netflix wants people who share other people's passwords to subscribe on their own.
Netflix will enforce password sharing rules through IP addresses, device ID, and account activity. To avoid the loss of users, Netflix may slowly phase out password sharing rather than stop it all at once.
Netflix's terms of service never allow multiple users to share, but Netflix has long turned a blind eye, and charging for account access to friends and family may upset some users. It is estimated that 222 million paying families share passwords with another 100 million families, and Netflix hopes to make a profit through these families.
CTOnews.com learned that in addition to boosting revenue by canceling password sharing, Netflix has launched a more affordable advertising support package priced at $6.99 a month in the United States.
