CTOnews.com, December 21 (Xinhua)-- revenue from the global smartphone market fell 3% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022, slightly more than $100 billion (about 696 billion yuan), according to the latest research by the Counterpoint market monitoring service. The average selling price (ASP) rose 10 per cent year-on-year as the high-end mobile phone market was more resilient to economic uncertainty. The contribution of record shipments of 5G phones (46 per cent), whose price is five times that of ordinary non-5G phones, has also increased ASP and revenue growth. In terms of shipments, shipments in the entire mobile phone market fell 12% year-on-year in the quarter.

Apple has become the largest OEM vendor by revenue thanks to the iPhone 14 series, which saw significant revenue growth in Q3 in 2022, according to a new study.

Apple continues to have the largest share of revenue in the global smartphone market, with Counterpoint Research reporting that it "alone accounts for more than half of all 5G phone revenue".

Shipments of smartphones from all brands fell 12% in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the same period in 2021, the research firm said. But "because Apple's revenue grew by 10% year-on-year, it prevented a bigger decline in revenue."

Smartphone revenue is still down from a year earlier, but only 3%. At the same time, 5G's share of revenue "reached an all-time high".

"with more than $80 billion (about 556.8 billion yuan), 5G handsets account for 80 per cent of global mobile revenue, a record high," said analysts at Counterpoint Research, "up from 69 per cent in the third quarter of last year."

"during the same period, the revenue contribution of LTE phones fell 10% to $19 billion (about 132.24 billion yuan)," analysts said. "this shift from 4G to 5G was led by Apple, which alone accounts for more than half of all 5G revenue, because more than 95 per cent of its phones support 5G."

"Apple's revenue grew 10% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022. [average selling price] rose 7% year-on-year, contributing to the overall growth of global mobile ASP, thanks in part to the launch of the iPhone 14 series and the good performance of Pro models, especially the previous generation of iPhone 13 Pro models."

CTOnews.com learned that during the same period, Apple's closest rival was Samsung, the second-largest mobile phone OEM by revenue, and while shipments of its high-end Galaxy Flip and Fold series almost doubled and 5G smartphone revenue rose 27 per cent year-on-year, ASP grew relatively modestly by 2 per cent in the third quarter of 2022. The lower growth of its ASP can be attributed to the shift in focus from the more successful S22 series to the still forthcoming folding screen series. In the third quarter of 2022, Samsung's smartphone revenue fell 4% from a year earlier.

Xiaomi's mobile phone revenue is up 4% year-on-year, with a large portion of it coming from low-and middle-priced segments. The share of shipments above $300 (about 2088 yuan) fell by nearly 1.5 per cent. However, there has been a significant shift from a price range of less than $200 to a price range of $200-$299. As a result, Xiaomi's ASP rose 14% year-on-year to $205 (about 1427 yuan).

On the other hand, ASP and revenue at OPPO (including OnePlus) fell 5 per cent and 27 per cent respectively from a year earlier. The decline in revenue was mainly due to a decline in OPPO shipments in the Chinese market affected by the outbreak, which contributed more than 40 per cent of its total shipments in the third quarter of 2022.

Given that the Chinese market accounts for more than half of vivo's total shipments, revenues have been hit even harder, down 43 per cent year-on-year despite a 4 per cent increase in the quarter.
