CTOnews.com, December 21 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- New plans from Red Hat and the Fedora engineering team show that Fedora 38, which will be launched next spring, will initially support Unified Kernel mirroring (UKI). Systemd developers have traditionally championed and promoted a unified kernel image to better protect and trust Linux distributions.

CTOnews.com learned that a unified kernel image is a combination of kernel images, initrd, and UEFI stub programs that are distributed as a large whole.

The change proposal for Fedora 38 outlines some plans to support unified kernel mirroring:

Our goal is to no longer generate initrd images on installed devices. These images will be automatically generated and released as a unified kernel image when the kernel installation package is built in the future.

The Unified Kernel Mirror is an integrated EFI installation file that includes kernel, initrd, cmdline, and signature. The secure boot signature covers everything, including initrd, and initrd is no longer loaded from / boot as a separate file.

The main motivation for this is to make the distribution more robust and secure.

It is unrealistic to switch the entire distribution to a unified kernel in a short period of time. Too many features depend on the current workflow and host-specific initrd (and host-specific kernel command line), which is fundamentally incompatible with the unified kernel, where everyone will have the same initrd and command line. This is why there is a "first phase" in the title, so we can introduce more phases in future releases.
