Hon Hai declined to comment. Hon Hai's Vietnam factory mainly supplies non-Apple products, and if it does produce MacBook in Vietnam, it will be of landmark significance to Hon Hai's manufacturing in Vietnam.

Apple has partnered with contract manufacturer Hon Hai Group to start production of the MacBook in Vietnam as soon as May next year, according to people familiar with the matter. Apple has been trying to diversify its supply chain, but it takes longer for MacBook production to shift because of the more complex supply chain needed to make laptops.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple currently produces about 20 million to 24 million MacBook a year, mainly in Chengdu and Shanghai, Sichuan.
