CTOnews.com, December 20, Vulkan API has introduced a number of video extensions in the form of encoder / decoder API in the latest version 1.3.238 update. The Vulkan Video extension was launched as Beta in early 2021, and Vulkan Video API version 1.0 is now officially released.

CTOnews.com learned that both Vulkan API and Vulkan Video API 1.0 are from The Khronos Group, and the latest Vulkan Video API 1.0 extension mainly includes the following four extensions:

VK_KHR_video_queue: standard API for all video coding operations.

VK_KHR_video_decode_queue: standard API for all video decoding operations.

VK_KHR_video_decode_h264: specific functions and parameters of H.264 decoding.

VK_KHR_video_decode_h265: specific functions and parameters of H.265 decoding.

Both "VK_KHR_video_decode_h264" and "VK_KHR_video_decode_h265" are currently marked as "KHR" extensions, but will be marked as "EXT" extensions in the future. Michael Larabel of Phoronix pointed out that Vulkan Video API 1.0 does not support AV1 or VP9 video acceleration extensions for the time being, but Khronos Group is already considering introducing it in future versions.
