CTOnews.com, December 20 (Xinhua)-- Canonical plans to use Google's Flutter UI SDK to rewrite the Ubuntu Desktop installer in the upcoming Ubuntu 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) release.

The new Ubuntu Desktop installer takes a more modern approach to deployment, using Ubuntu Server Installer (subiquity) as the background and Flutter to create a graphical user interface.

CTOnews.com learned that new Flutter-based installers have been around for some time, but previously had to be experienced by downloading a specific ISO image. In the upcoming version of Ubuntu 23.04, this new Flutter-based installer will be enabled by default.

Apart from the more modern user interface, the whole startup process of the new installer is no different from that of the old one. However, a few things have been added to the details, such as the ability to connect to the Wi-Fi network and the choice of using light or dark themes to install the system.

Keyboard and time zone selections, disk partitions, and user settings look basically the same. One thing I've noticed is that active Directory is not supported in the new installer, and I don't know if Canonical plans to implement it before Ubuntu 23.04 is released. At present, there is no ability to download updates during the installation process.

CTOnews.com learned that Flutter is an open source mobile application development kit developed by Google for developing applications for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux Desktop, and Google Fuchsia. The first version of Flutter supports the Android operating system, which is codenamed "Sky".
