CTOnews.com, December 20 (Xinhua)-- despite growing concerns about Chinese manufacturers' involvement in critical infrastructure, Germany is even more dependent on Huawei for 5G wireless access network equipment (RAN) than its 4G network, according to a new survey.

The survey, from Strand Consult Consulting, a telecom consulting firm based in Copenhagen, Denmark, surveyed 102 mobile network operators in 31 European countries to understand the share of Chinese and non-Chinese suppliers in their 5G networks and was one of a series of reports on "cyber security and China", according to the Global Times.

The survey results show that in 8 of the 31 countries, more than 50% of the 5G wireless access network equipment comes from Chinese manufacturers. Among them, 100% of the 5G wireless access network equipment in one country comes from Chinese manufacturers. Overall, 41% of mobile users in Europe have access to 5G devices from Chinese suppliers. In 2020, 51% of European mobile users connected to 4G devices from Chinese manufacturers.

In particular, the report points to Germany's continued dependence on China, Europe's largest economy. Huawei accounted for 59% of Germany's 5G wireless access network devices in 2022, compared with 57% of 4G networks in 2020, according to the report. Even Huawei has a higher market share in Germany than in China because it faces competition with ZTE and other manufacturers at home.

However, some telecom operators no longer use equipment from Chinese suppliers. Many Nordic and Eastern European countries, especially Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia, rarely use 5G equipment from Chinese suppliers.

CTOnews.com has learned that Huawei has repeatedly denied security risks to its equipment and accused Washington of wanting to protect US companies that cannot compete with Chinese technology and prices.
