The Macao-1 satellite is the first and so far the only scientific exploration satellite in the world to use a low-inclination orbit to monitor the geomagnetic field and space environment of the South Atlantic anomaly region (SAA) near the equator, and it is also Macao's first scientific and technological experimental satellite, officials said.

According to reports, the "Macao Science and Technology No. 1" satellite project is Macao's first science and technology test satellite jointly developed by the National Space Administration and the government of the Macao Special Administrative region, and it is China's first high-precision geomagnetic field detection satellite. It is responsible for by the State key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Science of the Macao University of Science and Technology.

Aoko-1, which is composed of AB double stars, aims to observe the fine characteristics of magnetic field variation in the abnormal region of the earth's magnetic field over the South Atlantic, to realize the prediction of recent changes in the geomagnetic field, and is expected to make meaningful achievements in the intersecting fields of astronomy and earth sciences (deep earth, deep sea, deep space).

According to CTOnews.com of Macao University of Science and Technology, the satellite was originally planned to be launched in 2021, but it was postponed to the second half of 2022 and recently postponed to the first half of 2023.

The satellite is composed of An and B stars: star An is equipped with advanced high-precision vector magnetometer, high-stability optical platform, high-precision scalar magnetometer, and satellite B is equipped with solar X-ray detector, energy electron spectrometer and so on.
