CTOnews.com, December 20 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft Senior Project Manager Olia Gavrysh surprised many attendees and developers by writing "Community Run Project" in the first entry of WPF's "New Features" slide presented last week. Microsoft later clarified that this meant that future updates would absorb more community pull requests rather than handing over WPF to community maintenance operations.

CTOnews.com learned that the full name of WPF is Windows Presentation Foundation, which is one of the components of .NET Framework 3.0 and later released by Microsoft. It is a set of display layer development framework based on XML, .NET Framework and vector drawing technology, which is widely used in Windows Vista interface development.

Gavrysh clarified: "WPF is not dead. We have a dedicated team responsible for maintaining and supporting WPF. We think that WPF is a very mature project, and now we have to transition to a large number of PR from the receiving community, so the progress of development at this stage is not very fast. We will accept more and more PR in the future."

Why do developers still use these old frameworks? Windows Forms can be traced back to the release of .NET in 2001 and WPF can be traced back to Windows Vista in 2006. The problem is that Microsoft has been trying to build a follow-up desktop framework with an equally good mix of developer productivity and capabilities.

After Windows 8, the latest development of .NET is WinUI (which requires at least Windows 10 1809) or MAUI (multi-platform application UI). After a long period of neglect, Microsoft ported both Windows Forms and WPF to the .NET Core, but the pace of development has been slow.
