According to the news on the evening of December 19, Beijing time, the European Commission said today that it had issued a "statement of objection" to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, saying that Meta may have distorted competition in the online classified advertising market and abused its dominant position in the market, in violation of the EU's anti-monopoly law.

"We challenge Meta's practice of bundling its online classified advertising service Facebook Marketplace with its social network Facebook," the European Commission said in a preliminary assessment statement. "We are also concerned that Meta has imposed unfair terms on Facebook Marketplace's competitors out of self-interest."

At the same time, the European Commission also stressed that the statement of dissent does not represent the final findings. If Meta is found to have committed an illegal act, Meta could be fined up to 10 per cent of its annual global turnover.

At the end of last month, Meta was fined 265 million euros (1.961 billion yuan, $277 million) by the European Union, mainly because the personal information of hundreds of millions of Facebook users was leaked to the Internet.
