Musk, who is in Qatar, posted a poll on Twitter after watching the World Cup final between Argentina and France: "should I resign as Twitter CEO?" Soon, the vote became the hottest topic in the United States.

Now that the vote is drawing to a close (with less than five hours left), 56 per cent of participants in 12 million votes expressed support for Mr Musk's resignation as Twitter CEO.

While initiating the vote, Musk also said that he would abide by the final result of the vote. This means that if current trends continue, Musk will eventually resign as Twitter CEO.

Although he promised to abide by the results of the vote, Musk did not specify when he would resign. In response to a comment from a Twitter user, Musk said: "there is no successor yet."

In fact, Mr Musk told a Delaware court last month that he would reduce his time at Twitter and eventually find a new leader to run the company. After taking over Twitter and carrying out a series of reforms, including massive layoffs, Musk has been questioned.

As we all know, in addition to serving as Twitter CEO, Musk is also CEO of Tesla, as well as managing space exploration technology company SpaceX, tunnel mining company The Boring Company and brain-computer interface company Neuralink.
