CTOnews.com, December 19 (Xinhua)-- Bitcoin fell off a cliff in 2022, and other virtual currencies were almost wiped out, according to the China Securities Network.

CTOnews.com learned that the price of bitcoin has been falling since it hit a peak of $47343 on January 2 this year, according to CoinMarketCap data. As of press time, Bitcoin tentatively reported $16749, its lowest level since December 2020, and prices have fallen more than 65 per cent so far this year.

Global bitcoin investors lost a total of $195 billion (1.3597 trillion yuan) in 2022, according to Glassnode. This means that most holders sell their bitcoins in a "meat-cutting" way. The months with the most losses were February, May, June and November.

In addition, the continued downturn in virtual money markets in 2022 brought the number of "zombie virtual currencies" (virtual currencies that have not been traded for a month) to 12100, according to Nomics, a virtual currency data provider.
