The power station is located on the lower reaches of the Jinsha River at the junction of Ningnan County, Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province. it is the largest and most technically difficult hydropower project under construction in the world, and represents the highest level of hydropower station construction in the world.

A total of 16 hydroelectric generating units are installed, which are completely independently developed by China and have the largest unit capacity in the world, with a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, second only to the three Gorges Power Station and ranking second in the world.

According to the report, the million kilowatt hydrogenerator set installed at Baihetan Hydropower Station not only ranks first in the world in terms of unit capacity, but also achieves 100 percent localization. Research and development, manufacturing and installation have led to the upgrading of the whole industry chain of hydropower equipment in China.

CTOnews.com learned that after the Baihetan Hydropower Station is fully completed and put into operation, it will become the second largest hydropower station in the world after the three Gorges Power Station, with an average annual generating capacity of 62.443 billion kilowatt hours, about 19.68 million tons of standard coal and 52 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
