Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens OC_Formula, Moon Night Yong'an for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, December 18, the dispute between Qualcomm and Arm has been quarrelling for some time. According to the latest statement of Qualcomm executives, it seems that Qualcomm wants to actively lay out the emerging RISC-V architecture, so as to get rid of the shackles of Arm to some extent.
At this week's RISC-V summit, Manju Varma, Qualcomm's director of product management, said that RISC-V is a new alternative to the proprietary Arm instruction set architecture and has the opportunity to be used on a range of devices that Qualcomm designs chips, including wearables, smartphones, laptops and connected cars, The Register reported.
According to Varma, starting with the Snapdragon 865 processor in 2019, he began to help shift the CPU strategy and roadmap of Qualcomm's entire product portfolio to RISC-V.
Varma said Qualcomm now uses RISC-V microcontrollers in PC, mobile devices, wearable devices, connected cars and SoC with AR / VR headers. These microcontrollers perform low-level tasks in the background, such as managing hardware. So far, Qualcomm has shipped more than 650 million RISC-V cores, and Qualcomm has become "one of the leaders in RISC-V implementation".
Varma also says RISC-V has the opportunity to be used in higher-value products, not just microcontrollers. "there is now a common basic instruction set architecture that can scale from low-end microcontrollers to high-performance computing, and anything in between, it does improve the efficiency of the entire industry."
According to Varma, Qualcomm first turned to the RISC-V microcontroller in Snapdragon 865 because it "needs something customizable to meet our unique requirements and takes up a small amount of space, while existing traditional architecture solutions do not meet these requirements."
CTOnews.com learned that it was reported that Varma mentioned the word "legacy architecture" three times, but did not specify the Arm architecture. Arm is suing Qualcomm in an attempt to destroy the latter's custom Nuvia kernel, which is designed to be compatible with the former's ISA.
In addition, while Varma expressed her appreciation for the RISC-V architecture, she also said that RISC-V needs more improvements, including ensuring a standardized system, IP, to reduce ecosystem fragmentation.
"Arm took risks in desperation, and IPO went to court with Qualcomm on the eve of the battle."
"Qualcomm litigation documents say that Arm will prohibit the public domain CPU from using external GPU, NPU or ISP."
