Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Dec. 18 (Xinhua)-- Twitter fired engineers at some of its infrastructure organizations on Friday night, reducing some of the staff the company has had to keep its social media services running, according to a source from The Information. The layoffs, which come days after some leaders of the department were laid off, are the latest in a series of layoffs made by Mr Musk at Twitter, whose headcount has fallen by nearly 75 per cent in the past six weeks.
The scale of the layoffs is unclear, but some engineers said on Twitter yesterday that they had been told by email that their contributions were no longer needed. Musk laid off Nelson Abramson, Twitter's head of infrastructure, as well as other senior employees of the company, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
According to The Information's estimates, Twitter's headcount has shrunk by about 75 per cent since Mr Musk bought the company at the end of October. CTOnews.com has learned that the social media site employs about 7500 people under the leadership of former chief executive Parag Agrawal. According to reports, as of a week ago, Twitter's internal Slack showed that the company currently has about 2000 employees. In November, Musk reportedly told the rest of the company that Twitter would not lay off staff.
The layoffs in the infrastructure sector are likely to increase concerns that the site may become unreliable in the near future. At the same time, the move is likely to further alienate Tesla's investors, who are already questioning how much time Mr Musk has spent on Twitter. After Abramson was fired, Musk hired Tesla engineer Sheehan Austin to manage Twitter's infrastructure team, according to The Information.
The layoffs also show that Twitter's financial situation seems precarious since Mr Musk took over. In recent weeks, Elon and other executives have reportedly discussed the potential consequences of refusing severance payments to thousands of people who have been laid off by the company in recent weeks. The company also owes its San Francisco headquarters and global satellite office network rent.
