CTOnews.com, December 18 (Xinhua)-- legendary programmer, producer of games such as German headquarters 3D and Thor Hammer, and id Software founder John Carmack announced today that he will resign from Meta. Carmack joined Oculus as chief technology officer in 2013, before the company was acquired by Meta, then Facebook, in 2014. Carmack stepped down from this position in 2019 to become chief technical officer of the consultant.

CTOnews.com learned that John Carmack, a pioneer in virtual reality, detailed his reasons for resigning as Meta in a post in which the technologist criticized his employer. Meta is transforming from a social networking company to an immersive company focused on meta-universe, with "half" operational efficiency and "a lot of people and resources, but we keep destroying ourselves and wasting our energy," he said.

"it's a struggle for me," Carmack wrote in a post on an internal forum this week. "I have a voice at the top here, so I feel like I should be able to move things forward, but obviously I'm not convincing enough."

As the former chief technology officer of Oculus, a virtual reality company acquired by Facebook for $2 billion in 2014, Carmack is one of the most influential voices leading the development of VR Touxian. Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive, stayed at Facebook last year after he decided to turn the company into a meta-universe and rename Facebook Meta.

However, while Meta is rapidly moving into what Kamak is good at, he sometimes opposes the progress of the work. He is known for criticizing Zuckerberg and Andrew Bosworth, chief technology officer of Meta, for their decisions and direction in internal posts. In recent years, Carmack has been working part-time for the company.

Meta's earnings have been hit hard by its spending on meta-universe and its slowing growth in social networking and digital advertising. In July, the Silicon Valley company reported its first decline in sales as a public company. Last month, Meta said it was laying off about 11000 employees, or 13% of its workforce, the largest layoff in the company.

In an August podcast interview, Carmack said he was "disgusted" by Meta's $10 billion loss in augmented reality and virtual reality. He added that the company's meta-cosmic efforts had been hampered by bureaucracy and by concerns about diversity and privacy.

Carmack said in the post that he would end his decade of work in the VR field and concluded that he was "tired of fighting with Meta" and would focus on his own business. He announced in August that his artificial intelligence company, Keen Technologies, had raised $20 million.
