CTOnews.com news on December 17 that the Linux 6.2 kernel will further remove NFSv2-related support. NFSv2 was originally implemented on SunOS 2.0 and was released in 1985. NFSv2 is no longer supported in mainstream Linux distributions, but the Linux Kernel source code tree still retains the relevant code.

CTOnews.com learned that the Network File system (NFS) is a distributed file that allows client hosts to access server-side files, and the process is the same as when accessing local storage. It was developed by Sun Microsystem (acquired by Oracle) and released in 1984. It is based on the open network computing remote procedure call (ONC RPC) system: an open, standard RFC system that any person or organization can implement according to the standard.

NFS has grown to version 4.2 (released in 2016). In Linux 5.18 released earlier this year, NFSD announced that it would change the threshold to NFSv3 and said it would remove NFSv2 code as soon as possible.

NFSv2 is no longer supported by rpc.nfsd programs. The next step for Linux 6.2 is to add the Kconfig option, which allows the kernel version to no longer support server-side NFSv2. The new kernel switch is NFSD_V2, which allows you to build the Linux 6.2 + kernel without NFSv2 support.

In addition to the option of building NFSv2 server code, Linux 6.2's NFSD changes add CB_RECALL_ANY support for low-memory scenarios and other situations, as well as various other NFS server code enhancements.
