According to today's updated official documentation, Microsoft will use Edge updates to kill IE, not Windows Update as previously thought. The "software bomb patch", which will be released on February 14, 2023, will help companies "ensure a smoother and easier transition from IE browsers to Microsoft Edge".

According to Microsoft, users who still rely on IE should act now to avoid a sudden disruption after February 14, 2023, when Microsoft will completely shut down support for the browser.

In the next few months, older IE browsers will be able to redirect users who try to open IE to IE mode in Microsoft Edge until Microsoft forcefully prohibits IE in February next year, followed by non-secure updates (optional) and June to forcibly delete IE 11 icons (files) on computers.
