Seven years later, in 2019, Microsoft announced support for the exFAT format on the Linux platform. Now, three years later, Linux 6.2 will incorporate new exFAT code from Sony to make file creation and indexing faster.

The exFAT code comes from Sony engineer Yuezhang Mo, who found that reducing the repeated traversal of directory items can greatly improve the performance of exFAT. This optimization is especially obvious in the low-end CPU environment.

CTOnews.com learned that Sony engineer Yuezhang Mo explained:

To come to this conclusion, we tested it with 5000 files. It is worth noting that the degree of improvement increases as the file size increases. The processing speed can be improved by up to 58%. The test was carried out on a SABRE i.MX6 Lite development board using a Class 4 SD card.
