CTOnews.com, December 17-SpaceX completed its landmark 200th orbital mission on Friday, December 16, local time, launching a pair of new communications satellites called O3b mPower 1 and 2 for Luxembourg-France satellite telecommunications network company SES.

At 05:48 EDT (6:48 Beijing time today), a Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Space launch site 40 of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Less than nine minutes after liftoff, he returned and landed safely on an unmanned recovery ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

It is reported to be the eighth return landing of the booster and the 200th orbital mission of the full range of SpaceX rockets (Falcon 1 made five flights between 2006 and 2009, Falcon 9 made its maiden flight on June 4, 2010, and four heavy Falcon rockets). It is worth mentioning that Falcon 9 has now flown 191 missions, including a record 57 in 2022 alone.

In the second phase, the O3b mPower 1 and 2 satellites will be sent into the scheduled MEO Earth orbit by a later stage, and deployment is scheduled to be completed within about two hours after launch.

Relative to Star chain and OneWeb,O3b mPower is the first of the company's planned constellation of 11 high-throughput and low-latency satellites to be launched, which aims to provide surface users with global broadband connectivity above Tbps. Both satellites are based on Boeing BSS-702X satellite bus and equipped with phased array antennas that can provide up to 5000 spot beams and allocate hundreds of Gbps of capacity to ground users.

CTOnews.com learned that SES plans to launch six more O3b mPower satellites in 2023 and three more in 2024.
