CTOnews.com December 16, JetBrains announced that it has partnered with Amazon to provide integration between Amazon CodeCatalyst and JetBrains Gateway.

Amazon CodeCatalyst is a unified software development and delivery service, including an on-demand development environment. This integration means that users can now use JetBrains Gateway to run their favorite JetBrains IDE in the Amazon CodeCatalyst development environment for remote development. All language processing takes place in AWS Cloud, and users can work locally using feature-rich thin clients. This creates a convergence between powerful cloud computing and a responsive and familiar JetBrains IDE experience.

The following is a brief introduction to remote development in JetBrains IDE.

Basically, the user's IDE is divided into two parts: the IDE backend on the remote server and the local client. The user interacts with the local thin client, which provides a smooth and responsive user experience. At the same time, the remote server is responsible for all the heavy processing work.

The local client distinguishes the JetBrains solution from the general remote desktop tool, which requires a round trip with each click and keystroke. This architecture is built and optimized for software development so that JetBrains can provide a native development experience.

The remote server contains the developer environment. Users can use cloud development environment providers (such as Amazon CodeCatalyst) to automate the creation and management of such environments, or they can configure them manually.

CTOnews.com learned that in addition to Amazon CodeCatalyst, users can currently run remote development environments in JetBrains Space, Google Cloud, Gitpod, or GitHub Codespaces.

Amazon CodeCatalyst provides a place where users can use CI / CD tools to plan their work, work with code, and build, test, and deploy applications. You can connect your AWS account to the CodeCatalyst space and use AWS resources in your project.

Having multiple development environments in CodeCatalyst allows you to quickly switch between different projects. Each development environment is configured with industry-standard Devfile, which can be modified to precisely define the tools and settings required for each task. The device configuration is also flexible, with up to 16 vCPU and 32GB RAM for computing and up to 64GB for storage.

With this partnership, Amazon CodeCatalyst users can now connect to JetBrains IDE hosted in AWS Cloud, such as IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Professional, and GoLand.

The combination of Amazon CodeCatalyst and JetBrains Gateway brings a variety of benefits to developers:

Flexibility-this combination provides more options. It helps to improve productivity when developers are free to work wherever they want and use any laptop they have at hand. Connecting to a remote machine will provide them with all the functionality they need, and they can easily work in happier and more efficient places.

Productivity-you can standardize the environment, runtime requirements, hardware specifications, extenders, and editor settings so that new team members can easily start and run the environment. These cloud-based development environments work basically like laptops in the cloud.

Security-the source code is always on the remote machine and will never be downloaded to the local machine. Even if the developer accidentally left his laptop in the cafe, there would be no security risks and no need to worry about the source code of the project.

Next step

Just download JetBrains Gateway, install the Amazon CodeCatalyst plug-in, select the environment you want to use, and start coding. Many IDE are supported, including IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Professional, and GoLand. Keep in mind that the remote development capabilities in these IDE are provided as beta versions.
