CTOnews.com Google announced today that it has enabled Matter Universal Smart Home Standard support for its Nest and Android devices without even having to download or install any updates.

From now on, Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub (Gen 1 and Gen 2), Nest Hub Max, and the new Nest WiFi Pro can all be used as central devices for Matter to control other smart home devices that support the Matter standard.

Google also introduced Matter support for Fast Pair on Android, which officially allows users to pair Matter-enabled devices with their home network as quickly as pairing Bluetooth headphones.

Matter is an open source standard that connects different home ecosystems together and can be adopted by any smart device to create a more seamless smart experience. Any Matter-compliant smart home device can be configured to work on Matter-enabled platforms.

In October, the Connectivity Standards Alliance, whose members include Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and other smart home manufacturers, announced the launch of Matter 1.0, the smart home accessory standard.

The initial version of Matter supports a variety of common smart home product categories, including lighting appliances, HVAC controls, window shades, security sensors, door locks, video players, protocol bridges, and control terminals that can be embedded in many different types of products.

CTOnews.com understands that Apple, Samsung, Midea, Green Rice, OPPO, Ubuntu, etc. have announced support for Matter 1.0 standard, and with the continuous participation of members, the integration experience of smart homes will continue to improve.

Google says it will support Matter for more products over the Christmas holidays and early 2023. All devices that support this standard will be marked with the Matter logo and will work with the Google products listed above and all other Matter devices.
