Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
December 15, according to foreign media quoted a number of sources familiar with the matter, Twitter's new boss Elon Musk (Elon Musk) seems to be preparing for the social media facing a number of lawsuits, and to reorganize the legal department. In the meantime, Musk fired his private lawyer and dispatched lawyers from SpaceX to support him.
Thousands of Twitter employees were fired or resigned after Mr Musk completed his Twitter acquisition at the end of October, including the company's chief legal officer and general counsel, and appointed his private lawyer, Alex Spiro, to head the company's legal and policy affairs. This leaves its entire legal department in a dilemma that no one can use.
However, people familiar with the matter said Spiro no longer works on Twitter because Mr Musk is unhappy with some of his decisions. Spiro, a prominent criminal defense lawyer, successfully defended Musk in a high-profile libel case at the end of 2019 and managed to enter the inner circle of the new Twitter boss.
In these decisions, Spiro called for the retention of James A. Baker, deputy general counsel of Twitter, amid multiple rounds of layoffs in Musk. Baker served as general counsel for FBI until May 2018 and joined Twitter in 2020. Last week, Musk said he fired Baker after learning that Baker was in charge of censoring a report on Twitter's decision to block the New York Post in 2020.
As a result of layoffs and departures, Mr Musk had to send lawyers from other companies to fill the gaps. It is reported that Musk brought in more than six lawyers from SpaceX to join Twitter, including Chris Cardaci, vice president of legal affairs at SpaceX, and Tim Hughes, senior vice president and general counsel.
In addition to the lawyers, Musk arranged for two cousins, many interns, fans and about 150 employees of his other companies to work on Twitter, including more than 50 Tesla employees who helped him take over Twitter.
Musk and Twitter are currently facing a large number of lawsuits. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), for example, is investigating whether the company is still complying with a consent order. In 2011, Twitter reached a settlement with FTC after two data breaches and said it would not mislead users about privacy protection. In May, the company paid $150 million to FTC and the US Department of Justice to settle allegations that it violated the terms of the consent order. FTC has sent a letter to Twitter asking if it still has resources and personnel to ensure that the company complies with the consent order, according to people familiar with the matter.
Musk also sent an email to employees, pointing out that "many confidential information leaked on Twitter" showed that some people had violated their confidentiality agreements with the company. "if you explicitly and intentionally violate the confidentiality agreement signed when you joined Twitter, you will bear the corresponding liability to the extent permitted by law, and Twitter will immediately seek compensation," he wrote. "
Musk's team is also considering the possibility of not paying severance pay to thousands of former employees. Although Musk and his advisers considered abandoning the severance payment when discussing layoffs at the end of October, Twitter finally decided that US employees would receive at least two months' salary as severance pay to enable the company to comply with federal and state labor laws.
According to people familiar with the matter, Musk's team is now reconsidering whether to pay part of the salary or directly face a lawsuit from disgruntled former employees. It is reported that many former employees have not yet received any official documents to leave Twitter. Mr Musk has refused to pay multimillion-dollar severance compensation to executives he says he has "justified" firing.
As Twitter shrinks, Musk's team has always wanted to renegotiate the terms of the lease agreement, according to people familiar with the matter. The company has received complaints from real estate investment and management companies, including Shorenstein, which owns Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco.
Mr Musk continues to cut jobs, including Nelson Abramson, global head of Twitter infrastructure, and Alan Alan Rosa, global head of information technology and vice president of information security, according to four people familiar with the matter. In addition, Twitter disbanded the Trust and Security Committee, which was established in 2016 to help Twitter address security and content censorship issues.
