CTOnews.com, December 15 (Xinhua) under pressure from the European Union, Apple is considering allowing third-party app stores to run on iPad and iPhone. Bloomberg reporter Mark Mark Gurman called it part of the major change, and Apple is also considering removing restrictions on third-party browsers that force the use of the WebKit browser engine.

Gurman said that Apple's changes are all in order to continue to operate under the new EU regulation "Digital Markets Act", but it is not clear whether Apple will promote it in other countries and regions.

"at present, third-party browsers, including Google's Chrome browser, require the mandatory use of WebKit, Apple's Safari browser engine," Mr Gurman said. Apple is considering abolishing this requirement in order to meet the requirements of the new rules.

Gurman did not provide additional details, nor did he provide a potential time for Apple to lift the restriction. But the move will allow web browsers and in-app browsers on iPhone and iPad to use alternative browser engines such as Google's Blink (used by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge) and Mozilla's Quantum (used by Firefox).

CTOnews.com learned that Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other popular web browsers such as Opera and DuckDuckGo are currently forced to use WebKit on iOS, resulting in limited differentiation from Safari. Apple has previously said that the implementation of WebKit requirements is mainly due to security and privacy concerns, but some people believe that the policy is anti-competitive.
